“Hi, our names are Freek (pronounced “Frake”) and Jessie van den Beukel. We have three young sons; Benjamin (5), Reece (3) and Caspar (1).

For both Jessie and I our lives and faith have been enormously impacted by the Christian youth camps that we attended. For me growing up in the Netherlands, I went to various Christian camps and festivals that laid the foundation for my faith, and Jessie has been part of the Pine Lake camps since she was a little girl, both as visitor, councillor and speaker. We met at Bibleschool in Germany in 2003, and I moved to Calgary in 2005. We’re both artists, and I’m a carpenter by trade.

Being in a position to be able to help make this encounter with God happen for youth today is a huge privilege to us as we see how it shaped our lives, and the lives of many around us. As a family we’re excited to take good care of the camp and the site, and make sure it’s physically in the best shape it can be.”

How we Got to Be Here!!!

**Story told by Owen Still:
It was in the days of gas rationing, that four of us (Tom Rash, Frank Rempel, Owen Still,
John Bergman ) went looking for a site for a permanent church camp. We stayed at the
Sandy Cove Hotel and heard of a possible place nearby. So we drove across the ice to see
it, Owen and Tom standing on the rear bumper of John’s black Chrysler (“Chrissy”) in
fear of breaking through the ice. We saw the property, 43 acres with a half mile lakefront.
We drove to Erskine and got purple gas so we could continue to Lacombe to see the
owner. John negotiated for $4300. We approached the ACMS (Alberta Church
Missionary Society) but they were not to help, so we tried the AYPA(Alberta Young
People’s Asscociation, precurser to PYPA) and they said to go for it. We held workbees
and meetings at the camp. Pledges were taken for the downpayment. The owner came out
to see what this group was like – he was so impressed with the enthusiasm and desire that
he took $100 off the price.

Les says it best, “I love camp, and I believe it is the most crucial discipleship ministry in the kingdom in our time. There is so much to be built into youth and children; important friendships and eternal relationship with Jesus to be nurtured.”

Lyn Wood hired as Camp Director

The Pine Lake Christian Camp Board of Directors is please to announce the hiring of Lyn Wood as part-time Camp Director. We asked Lyn to share a little bit about herself and what lead her to this position.

I was born and raised in the Great Bend area just 35kms from Pine Lake Christian Camp. I attended camp from a young age.  I moved away to Edmonton where I took my Nurses training at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, upon graduation I worked at Camp Health, Hope and Happiness for 5 seasons as one of the camp nurses. The love of camps and the importance of the role they play in lives has never left my radar screen. I have attended many Ladies retreats through the years and have encouraged people to give camp a try. I have also lived in BC, Manitoba and Ontario. Besides working at Camp He Ho Ha I have worked at the Glenrose Hospital with Handicapped kids, Pediatric wards at the Misericordia, Grey Nuns and Health Science Hospitals. I also worked on Palliative care units in Edmonton and Winnipeg. Lee and I were married in 1992. I became a stay at home Mom with a 4 year old when we moved to Ontario and ran a daycare in my home during those 6 years.

We moved back to Edmonton 9yrs ago and I continued to stay at home and be active volunteering in my home church, Christs Church of the Meadows. I have led numerous Bible study groups, been involved in Greeting Team, Care Team, and Missions Team.

When the opportunity arose for Camp Director it seemed a pretty good fit. Those who know me well, will tell you that I enjoy communicating, some say talking! I love camp and I know the difference camp experience can make in someone’s life. It is at camp where I realized that I wasn’t alone in this walk that there were other kids from all over Alberta who were walking this walk. It was exciting to go back each year and reconnect with these friends. We had a close friend pass away a couple of years ago and one of the last things he talked to us about was his camp experiences and how those were some of the most important life changing moments for him.

I am looking forward to meeting each of you and hearing your stories and having you hear some of mine. Most importantly I want you to be involved in this life changing ministry, I want you to be a camper, a volunteer, a leader, a dean, I want you to see the camp first hand, help out at a work bee, bring your family to Family camp, I want you to invest in the future of our camp prayerfully, physically, and financially. Camp is an investment in the lives of future generations for Christ!
